Murray Thom – What we can learn from him

If you were at V2B, you would have seen one of the greatest speeches of your life. You would have witnessed inspiration, with arms, legs and all the other bits in the right places, inspiration that moved and spoke and hopefully inspiration that inspired. Here are a few points that I believe are important to remember:

  • Your heart needs to be in your idea, don’t do it for any other reason. Just like anything in life, do it for a noble reason, not to get rich quick.
  • Calculate how much risk you are comfortable taking. Maybe you could survive on $28 000 a year, break that down to how much you need weekly and go from there. That will give you a target to go for, when you start your business.
  • Inspiration does not shout, it simply whispers. So when you hear those whispers and a light bulb flickers on your head, change the battery in your brain. Don’t make excuses for why things wouldn’t work – simply work with the idea that you have and give it a go. Typically as human beings we tend to reason AWAY from inspiration, thats why everyone isn’t successful.
  • Your work should restore your soul, don’t kill yourself with your work. You should enjoy what you do and be passionate about it, if you create a good working environment for yourself, then your staff will love to work for you. Also, as a side note – your work should be something that is at the very least legal and wont eat at your conscience all the time, so to all those people wanting to get into the opium business… im sorry.
  • What is work? Sometimes people go into an office and think about Call of Duty all day. Others might be playing Call of Duty but thinking about how they could improve your business. Find out where and what inspires you to think and continue to expose yourself with those things and activities.
  • Don’t confuse attendance with performance, just because someone is there to do the work, doesn’t mean they are performing well. It is better to be paid to do a good job, rather than just scrape through. This is one of the reasons NCEA is a huge FAIL.
  • Recreation and Inspiration go hand in hand. Make sure that you take care of yourself, you should always put yourself before money. You don’t need to pay $150 a month to les mills, go for a walk – whatever you need to do to make sure that you are active. I find that my best ideas come when I’m at the gym with one of my best friends; Sam McEwan. Our conversations usually trigger something in my mind that starts the flicker of a lightbulb.
  • Lastly, if you are taking minutes; you are wasting hours. This point is fairly self explanatory.

I hope that you found that helpful and insightful. I am keen to hear what you remember and found interesting about the event, leave a comment and let me know =D.
